The Matrix Resurrections
Like Revolutions before it, this title is plural for a reason. There isn't just one resurrection going on here - there are at least three, stacked on top of each other:
- The most literal resurrection is the franchise itself. Warner Bros. told the Wachowskis a fourth Matrix movie was happening whether they helped or not, since their contract gave the studio that right. Lana Wachowski chose to take the wheel personally rather than hand the franchise off to strangers, and the result is a movie about a story being dragged back to life against its own creator's original wishes, made by that very creator. The Matrix as a franchise got resurrected, whether it wanted to be or not - which the movie itself is very aware of.
- The most obvious resurrection is Neo and Trinity's. Both of them are dead in every sense that matters by the end of Revolutions - Neo blind and spent defeating Smith, Trinity impaled getting him to Machine City - and the Analyst literally rebuilds them decades later, memories wiped, and wires them back into a Matrix designed specifically to keep them alive, apart, and generating power.
- The least obvious resurrection is the Matrix system itself. By the end of M3, Neo has bought humanity something closer to real peace, and the illusion of choice the Architect ran on has genuinely started to give way to something more honest. The Analyst's redesign throws that out and resurrects the old system of manufactured non-choice, just wearing a friendlier face - not the Architect's cold math anymore, but engineered hope and despair, running on Neo and Trinity's own feelings for each other as fuel. The old Matrix didn't stay dead either.
